Description

So I've been drawing mostly during the nights recently, because I can't focus during the day or something. I found a big old sketchpad, and I aim to fill it up quickly with gesture drawings and random sketches like this, just to get some practice.

I have got to figure out how to avoid drawing heads so large compared to the body. It looks all right in the sketch stage, but when I'm done, the head is just gigantic compared to the shoulders, and it just makes me sad. I'm also still not liking the way I draw faces.

I've had this same problem with my drawings. The thing about larger head proportions though is that it does provide more expressive characters. However, they can tend to look like a bunch of children or chibis or something if it gets too out of hand.

Something I tried, which seemed to work for me, was to use a reference point somewhere on the figure's body for the size of the head. I know I know, old school stuff. My favorite proportion was to not let the height of the head exceed the length of the forearm. Like I said, it worked for me but it might be too silly for other folks.

Anyway, as far as the faces go I think these are fine. If you were going for ultra realism then a few of the proportions are distorted, but for an animated/comic style it is solid. I definitely don't think they are too exagerated though.

Ok, I'll stop commenting now :P
